Abstract
This study examines how predisposing factors, enabling factors, and need factors are associated with health behaviors and how these factors further affect depressive symptoms among Korean elderly. Sample consists of 4,155 elderly aged 65 and over who participated in the 1st wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA), Data analyses were done through the Structural Equation Modeling(SEM), The results showed that predisposing factors, enabling factors, need factors, and health behaviors are associated with depressive symptoms. Age, gender, and income presented only direct effects on depression symptoms. Education, informal and formal social networks, chronic diseases and pains showed both direct and indirect effects on depression. However, the indirect effects were not statistically significant, indicating most effects were direct. These results indicate that elderly depression is associated with various factors. Therefore, we need to consider various factors and mechanisms involved in the process of elderly depression in order to develop intervention or prevention strategies for elderly depression.
